Sickle-cell disease results from a mutation in the gene for hemoglobin (see blue below). The result of this mutation is the wrong amino acid is inserted as the ribosome "reads" the code and produces the protein, hemoglobin. The appearance of red blood cells (sickle-cells) with the defective hemoglobin is shown in Fig. 5.19, page 72 of your text.
