Lab Topic 3, Microscope and Cells
Instructions for Preparing Lab Report
Lab Topic 3 does not involve any "experimentation" or hypothesis testing.  The lab report for this Topic will not contain the standard report sections: abstract, introduction, etc.  Follow the following instructions in preparing your lab report.
This lab report will follow the format of a "slide show," and it will rely heavily on images that you will insert to describe various features of cells.  You should obtain  images from the following sources:
  • Internet,
  • scanned images from textbook or lab manual,
  • scanned image from a book checked out of the library
  • digital photographs taken in class.
Your professor has prepared a draft of the Lab Report/Slide Show as a Word document.  The document is also saved under Bill Wilcox's folder next to your student folder.  The Template has tables for you to insert images and captions into and directions.

Example:  In the Introduction you are asked to  use images to illustrate the differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.  Each image must have a caption, of not more than three sentences, that explains the significance of the image.  You must open at least one image in the "Paint" program and label at least 1 part of the image, such as "nucleus, cell wall," etc.  See example below:

This amoeba is an example of a single celled organism.  Amoeba are classified as "eukaryotic" cells because they contain a membrane enclosed nucleus and are much larger than "prokaryotic" cells (bacteria).

The above  example above was obtain by going to google.com and searching for Images: "amoeba."

How to to obtain, label and insert and Internet image:
  • go to google.com and click on Images then type in "amoeba"
  • search through until you find an image you like
  • right mouse click on the image and save the image in a your Folder for "Microscopes and Cells"
  • open your "Paint" program and open the saved image in the Paint program (click on All Files to show all file types)
  • use the Paint Text Tool to draw a small text box and type in a label
  • save the labeled image back in your Folder
  • Insert the image into your Word document
  • always cite the source of your image in a caption under the image
