Ions
What is an ion, and why are they important?

An ion is an atom or molecule with a positive (+) or negative (-) charge.

The charge results from an imbalance between the number of protons (+) and the number of electrons (-).

The following illustrates a high speed neutron, perhaps from a nearby nuclear explosion, knocking an electron out of its orbit around a helium atom, forming a helium ion.

A balanced, neutral atom is not attracted to other positive or negative objects such as magnets.

"Opposite charges attract, and like charges repel."

Which would most likely be attracted to the negative (-) end of a refrigerator magnet?

a.  He
b.  He+
c.  He-

The attraction and repulsion of ions is a major force in cells driving everything from muscle contraction to nerve transmission.  If you want a demonstration, then run in the heat all day and drink only distilled water, no Gatorade.

Other activities in the body that rely on ion attractions in cells.
